Halton Region Waste Management Services provides 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) programs to help residents, schools and businesses reduce their waste.

In April 2008, Halton Region implemented new waste management programs, including weekly collection of Blue Box and GreenCart materials, and every other week collection of garbage.

Before these program changes, the Region was consistently diverting 42% of its residential waste away from the landfill, each year.

As a result of the new waste management programs, we’re now diverting just over 60% of waste away from the landfill!

Thank you to all Halton residents for making the new waste collection programs such a success.

Your efforts have resulted in 27,448 less tonnes of garbage going to the landfill. By continuing to divert 60% of waste, the landfill life will extend from 2023 to 2030!

By excluding regular plastics (including diapers) and pet waste (containing unwanted pathogens) from the GreenCart program, we provide the composting facility with a clean material source, resulting in a higher quality final compost product.

General Information

  • Don’t be late. Place your waste at the curb by 7 a.m. the morning of your collection day, but no sooner than 5 p.m. the evening before.
  • Keep the weight down. Containers and bags should weigh no more than 23 kg (50 lbs). Items that are too heavy will not be collected. Do not put material out in cardboard boxes.
  • Only put waste at the curb. On your collection day, only place waste materials at the curb. Items including dollys, laundry baskets, totes, bicycles, etc., may be mistakenly collected by the collection truck or scavenged by other residents. Halton Region and its collection contractors are not responsible for items mistakenly collected or scavenged.
  • Winter safety. During the winter, ensure material is free of snow and ice and is visible to the collection crew. Do not place material on top of snow banks.
  • Avoid accidents. Wrap broken glass and sharp objects in a puncture-resistant package before putting them in your garbage (e.g. taped and sealed cardboard box, sealed plastic tub).
  • Avoid injuries. Do not put syringes or needles in your garbage or Blue Box. Please contact your pharmacy or doctor’s office for proper disposal advice, or call the Halton Region Health Department by dialing 311 or 905-825-6000 or 1-866-4HALTON (1-866-442-5866) or TTY 905-827-9833.
  • Avoid pests. Rinse plastic wrap and plastic containers before putting them in the regular garbage or Blue Box. Tie garbage bags and/or store in a container with a tight fitting lid.
  • Protect the environment. Do not put household hazardous waste such as batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, paint, chlorine, pesticides and motor oil in your Blue Box, GreenCart or garbage. Instead, bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot located at the Halton Waste Management Site. Household hazardous waste will be disposed of safely and properly, free of charge (20 L limit). Commercial loads cannot be accepted. Check the Take It Back! Halton directory at www.halton.ca/takeitback for retail locations that also accept some of these items for recycling or proper disposal.
